Your information, in plain language.
This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and what you can do about it. We follow Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and we keep the language plain.

Information we collect
We only collect the personal information we actually need to run our business and serve our clients. This includes your name, phone number, email address, physical address of the project site, and any details you choose to share about your project when you fill out our quote form, call us, or email us directly.
When you visit our website, we also collect basic technical information through analytics — things like the pages you viewed, the browser you used, the approximate region you visited from, and how you arrived at our site. None of this is tied to your name unless you submit a form.
How we use your information
We use your information for the purposes you’d expect: to respond to your quote request, schedule consultations, provide a project estimate, execute the work, bill you, honour the warranty, and stay in touch about your project. We also use aggregate site analytics to understand which pages are working and which ones need improvement.
We don’t sell your information. We don’t rent it. We don’t share it with marketing companies or data brokers. If a trades partner needs to contact you as part of a project — for example, a licensed electrician we subcontract — we’ll ask you first.
Cookies and tracking
Our site uses a small number of cookies to remember your preferences (like dismissing the cookie banner) and to power privacy-friendly analytics. You can decline non-essential cookies through the banner that appears on your first visit, and you can clear cookies at any time through your browser settings.
Third-party services
A few third-party services help us run the site and business:
- Hosting: Our website is hosted on Vercel, which stores temporary server logs for security and reliability purposes.
- Email: Business email is handled through a professional email provider with standard encryption in transit and at rest.
- Analytics: We use privacy-respecting site analytics that do not track you across other websites.
Each of these providers has their own privacy practices. We’ve chosen them because they meet or exceed the standards we hold ourselves to.
Data retention
We keep client project records — contracts, quotes, invoices, correspondence, and photos — for as long as the warranty on your project is active, plus an additional seven years to comply with Canadian tax and business record-keeping requirements. After that, records are securely destroyed.
Quote requests that don’t turn into projects are retained for up to 12 months in case you decide to move forward later, and are then deleted.
Your rights under PIPEDA
Canadian privacy law gives you specific rights over your personal information:
- The right to know what personal information we hold about you.
- The right to see a copy of that information and ask us to correct anything that’s wrong.
- The right to withdraw consent for non-essential uses of your data, subject to legal and contractual limits.
- The right to file a complaint with us or directly with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at reception@sawdustandsteel.ca. We’ll respond within 30 days — usually much sooner.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect your information from loss, theft, and unauthorized access. That includes encrypted transmission for our website and email, access controls on our business systems, and regular review of who on our team can see what.
No system is bulletproof. If a security incident affects your personal information, we will notify you as quickly as possible — and notify the Privacy Commissioner as required by law.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time as our business practices evolve or as the law changes. When we do, we’ll update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. If the changes are significant, we’ll also post a notice on our website for 30 days so you have a chance to review them.
