List what will need service
A simple soaking tub and a powered bath have different needs. Identify the drain and overflow connections, valves, pumps, blowers, controls and any manufacturer-required service points. Mark each on a plan before deciding which wall gets the hatch. Some components may be serviced through a removable apron or a designed opening instead.
Kohler’s guide 1188012-2 requires access to the control amplifier and control-board connections for that bath. It is a useful example of why the access location must follow the equipment layout rather than a generic “behind the taps” rule. Kohler: Bath installation guide 1188012-2.

A closet wall can be a good route, if it stays usable
Access from the dry side of an adjacent room often avoids a complicated wet-area opening. But a closet full of fixed shelving can block the very panel it was supposed to hide. Coordinate shelf depth, baseboard and door trim. A panel that requires dismantling built-in cabinetry is not convenient routine service access.
Where an opening affects a fire separation, acoustic assembly, insulation or air barrier, preserve the required wall performance with an appropriate detail. Do not cut an unplanned hole into a protected assembly just because the plumbing is on the other side. Confirm those constraints before the tub is enclosed.
Finish the panel so it can be removed twice
Make the fixing method clear and keep it independent of permanent tile and grout where the system requires removal. If a concealed tile panel is used, follow a suitable access-panel system and its wet-area detail. Ordinary grout across a removable joint defeats the idea and encourages damage during the first repair.
Photograph the open panel with the components labelled in the household’s maintenance record. Save the model numbers and instructions there. If access is being added because the tub moves, the tub-support guide helps establish what should be inspected before the opening is closed.
