Decide what you are trying to change
A tired colour or worn finish is a surface problem. An uncomfortable tub, inaccessible drain, moving base or repeated leak is not. List those concerns separately before collecting quotes. A fresh coating can make the first problem look better while leaving the others exactly where they were.
Identify the tub material and any previous refinishing. Peeling around the drain may involve an old coating rather than the original tub finish. Ask the refinisher whether the existing surface can be prepared reliably, how repairs will be made and what defects remain outside the scope.
Refinishing fits
Sound tub, useful layout, surface wear and an acceptable care routine.
Investigate before coating
Cracks, movement, leakage or substantial corrosion.
Replacement fits
Wrong size or function, damaged structure, or a wider remodel already opening the area.
Compare complete cost
Include removal, surround work, plumbing, curing time and access.
Treat preparation as part of the professional scope
NIOSH documents fatal exposures involving methylene-chloride stripping products used in bathtub refinishing. This is a reason to ask about the contractor’s products and exposure controls, not to improvise stripping in an enclosed bathroom. NIOSH: Dangers of bathtub refinishing.
Get the process, products, room isolation and return-to-use instructions in writing. Follow the contractor’s safe occupancy and ventilation requirements. A household bathroom fan is not a substitute for whatever controls the product and professional procedure require.
Ask how the surface will be lived with
Confirm approved cleaners, whether suction-cup mats are permitted, how the drain edge will be treated and what the warranty excludes. Ask who deals with a chipped finish and whether a future repair can be blended. Avoid choosing on an unsupported promise that every refinished tub lasts a fixed number of years.
For replacement, price the route in and out, disposal, plumbing alterations and the likely effect on the surround. Replacing a tub that runs behind wall tile may involve more finish work than the new fixture price suggests. If the existing surround is valuable, a careful assessment can clarify what can remain.
A tub that flexes needs the support investigation before any surface decision. If hidden equipment is involved, include service access in both quotes so a cosmetic upgrade does not make maintenance harder.
