Match the control to the missed step
Watch the household’s routine for a few days. Is the fan never switched on, switched off as soon as the light goes out, or left running long after the room dries? Those are different reasons to change the control. A simple labelled timer may solve the second one without adding an unfamiliar sensor setting.
Panasonic’s Whisper Suite range demonstrates that automatic sensing and delayed-off operation can be combined in a fan. Read the selected model’s actual control logic; products differ in what triggers them and how manual operation behaves. Panasonic: Whisper Suite humidity-sensing fan.
Countdown timer
The user starts ventilation and chooses a run period.
Humidity sensing
The control responds to its measured humidity conditions.
Combined operation
Automatic response can coexist with manual or delayed-off functions.
Continuous ventilation system
Preserve the designed base operation and use an approved boost control.
Humidity is not a universal on-off signal
A sensor measures conditions at its own location. A humid summer day, a draught or a position far from shower moisture can affect how it behaves. Some products use a set threshold; others respond to changing humidity or include other sensing. Read the instructions before interpreting unexpected operation as a fault.
Choose a control with settings and an override the household will understand. If it repeatedly runs at inconvenient times, investigate the setting and room humidity rather than disconnecting the feature immediately. Equally, a quiet fan that has not started is not evidence that a steaming room is being ventilated.
Keep the control compatible with the system
An electrician should confirm the fan motor, wiring, control rating and any neutral-wire requirement before a new switch is bought. In Ontario, use a licensed electrical contractor for contracted electrical work. A fan providing continuous whole-home ventilation must retain its designed operating schedule; replacing its controller with a countdown timer can undermine that purpose. ESA explains how to verify a licensed contractor.
After installation, observe normal showers and the drying period with the door in its usual position. Persistent wet surfaces call for checking airflow, replacement air and the outdoor termination as well as control settings. If the fan rattles, start with the service checks. If mirror edges stay wet, the desilvering guide explains another reason to address the room’s moisture routine.
