Start with what changed

Write down whether you removed only the grille or also disturbed the blower assembly. Note whether the noise starts immediately, changes as the fan slows, or happens on windy days even with the fan off. A recording taken from the room can help a service technician without requiring you to open an energised unit.

Broan-NuTone’s service instructions require power isolation at the service panel before cleaning and describe the cleaning method for the covered models. They also warn against oiling a permanently lubricated motor. Find the manual for your model before doing more than its permitted maintenance. Broan-NuTone: Fan service and cleaning instructions.

Use the sound as a service clue
  • Rattle began after grille removal

With power isolated, check the grille and spring seating.

  • Scrape follows the motor speed

Stop use; ask for impeller and motor inspection.

  • Noise continues with the fan off

Have the exterior damper or duct investigated.

  • Heat, smell or electrical damage

Keep power off and arrange qualified repair.

Grille springs have a correct home

Broan-NuTone’s InVent Clean Cover guidance shows specific spring orientation and receiving slots. Springs pushed into the wrong place may leave a cover crooked even though it appears to stay up. Broan-NuTone: InVent grille spring installation.

Work from a stable platform, following the model’s removal instructions with power isolated. Check that a lens, trim piece or spring was not bent or left partly engaged. Do not reach into rotating parts, run the fan while holding the cover, or add screws through the housing to quiet a vibration.

Do not keep cleaning a mechanical fault

Dust can contribute to noise, but a damaged impeller or worn motor is not improved by another wash. Keep water and sprays away from electrical parts and follow the approved cleaning method. If the service assembly will not seat normally, do not force it into position or alter its tabs.

After correct reassembly, restore power only when everything is enclosed as instructed and check operation from the room. Persistent noise needs the exact compatible service parts or a replacement assessment. If the fan works but is rarely used because its controls are inconvenient, compare timer and humidity-sensor controls after the noise is resolved.
