Hold the numbers in place with a paper template first. Check them from the approach to the house and with the door open. Moving a template is cheap; moving several holes through finished siding is a different afternoon.
Separate the sign support from the siding face
Identify the cladding material and the fixing method supplied with the numbers. A flat-backed plaque, individual floating numbers and a heavy metal address board create different connection needs. A mounting block can provide a level face, but it still needs a suitable attachment behind it.
Vinyl Siding Institute installation manual warns against attaching accessories so tightly that they restrict vinyl movement. Its specialty-attachment guidance is a useful principle; use the siding and accessory instructions for the actual detail.
Support
The sign transfers its load into an appropriate backing.
Movement
Cladding can move as its manufacturer intends.
Water
Penetrations meet the wall drainage detail, not just a dab on the face.
Know what is behind the drilling point
Do not choose a longer screw simply because the short one feels loose. Wall construction, concealed services and backing position need to be known. If the proposed mounting block requires opening the cladding, have a siding installer integrate it with the existing wall layers.
For masonry, the anchor selection depends on the actual material and its condition. A joint, hollow brick and solid concrete are not interchangeable substrates. Ask the number supplier which fixing options it accepts, then have the installer match them to the wall.
Make the layout useful after dark
Review visibility with the existing porch light, and make sure plants or an open gate will not hide the address. If illumination needs new electrical work, settle that location with the electrician before fixing the plaque. Do not route an improvised cable through the same holes.
Retain the template and product details. After installation, look for a dented siding profile or a sign that rocks when lightly touched. Those are reasons to have the connection reviewed rather than tightened harder. A hose reel needs a separate, higher-load design; address-sign hardware is no precedent for it.
