The vacuum canister can look alarming after the first few cleans of a new carpet. Its contents alone do not tell you whether the floor is wearing out. Short loose fuzz spread across a room and one long yarn drawing out of a doorway are two very different conversations with the supplier.

Ask what the carpet is made from, not just its fibre name

Shaw's explanation of staple and continuous-filament yarn distinguishes shorter fibres spun together from long continuous filaments. Staple yarn can release loose fibres; continuous-filament construction does not have the same expected staple-fibre shedding. 'Nylon' or 'polyester' on its own therefore does not answer the question. Ask for the product's yarn construction and care sheet.

Keep the invoice, style name, colour and any spare offcut. A retailer can usually work from the order record when the label is no longer available. Do not assume a carpet is defective because a different product in another bedroom shed less, or assume every new carpet should lose the same amount for the same number of weeks.

Check the pattern of the loose material

The Carpet and Rug Institute's installation guidance distinguishes shedding from isolated sprouts and warns against pulling loose ends. Its trimming advice for an isolated sprout should not be stretched into permission to cut an unidentified loop or a developing run. If you cannot tell what is attached, leave it for the installer.

Take a close photograph with a ruler beside the affected area, without pushing the ruler into the pile. Add a wider room photograph so the location is clear. If the problem is local to a join, the carpet seam guide explains what to record about gaps, peaking and edge damage.

More aggressive brushing can make the wrong carpet worse

Shaw's vacuum guidance does not prescribe one brush setting for every carpet. It identifies thick loop constructions, particularly wool and wool blends, as susceptible to brush-related fuzzing, and warns about long yarn catching around a rotating brush. Those constructions need the appropriate suction-only or brush-adjustment arrangement described by the maker.

Use the instructions for your exact carpet and vacuum together. Confirm that the brush can actually be switched off if that is required; raising the handle or selecting a hard-floor mode does not mean the same thing on every machine. Check the head for tangled yarn with the vacuum unplugged, and avoid forcing a head that is difficult to push through dense pile.

A sensible cleaning record is simple: date, vacuum model and setting, and whether the visible pile changed. There is no need to weigh every canister. The useful trend is whether appropriate maintenance reduces loose surface material while the carpet stays intact, or whether a particular spot continues to lose yarn.

Give the retailer something more useful than 'it sheds a lot'

Ask the supplier to confirm whether this style uses staple or continuous-filament yarn, whether the vacuum is suitable, and what findings warrant inspection. Include the photographs and maintenance details. If they recommend waiting, ask what change they expect and when they want an update. A generic 'new carpet always sheds' is not enough to explain a growing bare patch.

Keep a small bag of the loose material if requested and retain the offcut. Avoid improvised sealers, glue or extensive clipping while the cause is being assessed. Where the disagreement concerns manufacture versus installation, use the warranty responsibility guide to organize the claim without guessing which party caused it.
