The trim looked white when the brush was put away. A week later the same brown circles returned. Paint can cover colour without stopping the material that is causing it to migrate through the new film.

A knot pattern is a clue, not the whole diagnosis

Compare the marks with visible knots on an unpainted offcut or a hidden edge, if available. Small rounded marks repeated along pine trim suggest knot bleed. Broad discolouration, a tide line, softness or a stain below a window calls for a moisture investigation. A metal fixing can also produce a local stain, so check what lies beneath the spot.

Choose the next step from the stain pattern

What is beneath the brown mark?

  • Wood extractives

Mark follows a sound, dry knot

Select a coating system intended to block knot or resin staining.

  • Moisture

Area is damp, soft or expanding

Find the water source and assess damaged material before painting.

  • Possible metal staining

    Spot centres on a fixing

Inspect the fixing and compatible stain treatment rather than assuming a knot.

Use a primer intended for the stain

Zinsser B-I-N shellac-base primer is identified by its manufacturer for sealing knots and sap streaks. That is a specific product function, not a promise that every white primer blocks the same stains. Read the current label for the substrate, preparation, ventilation, ignition precautions and topcoat compatibility.

Do not apply over wet material or active sticky resin and hope the primer will solve the source. Ask the coating manufacturer how to prepare that condition, or consider replacing a troublesome piece of trim. Where repeated staining affects many knots, treating the complete piece can be more predictable than chasing separate spots, provided the selected system permits it.

Check older coatings before disturbing them

Health Canada advises checking for lead paint before renovation and not sanding or scraping leaded coatings. Have suspect old paint assessed before preparing it. Once the coating is known and preparation is appropriate, clean and prepare only as the primer instructions require; avoid broad sanding merely because the repair is frustrating.

Use a small test area to confirm adhesion and stain control through the complete primer-and-topcoat sequence. Let each stage dry for the conditions and times on its label. A stain that is invisible while the paint is wet has not yet passed the test. Check again after drying under the room's normal light.

Finish to a natural break

A local stain-blocking patch can leave a different texture or sheen if the finish coat is dabbed only over the spot. Once the stain is controlled, repainting the full trim face to a corner or joint often gives a more even result. Preserve the profile rather than building a mound of paint over each knot.

If the defect is a visible dent around a nail rather than colour bleeding through, use the filled nail-hole guide. If the trim itself is raised or swollen, the MDF water-damage checks address a different repair entirely.
