Nail holes have a way of disappearing under wet paint and returning when the afternoon sun arrives. Before adding another coat, find out whether the problem has a shape. Paint can even out colour and sheen, but it does not reliably flatten a shallow crater.
Move the light, not the filler knife
Look along the trim with light coming from the side. Check whether the spot casts a tiny shadow or catches a highlight. If it feels smooth and changes visibility mainly with the viewing angle, the issue may be different sheen or absorption. If you can see a dip, more topcoat is unlikely to correct it.
Is the defect in the surface or the finish?
Low spot
A small depression
The fill may have shrunk, been applied too thinly or been sanded below the surrounding surface.
High spot
A raised edge or mound
Excess filler or paint needs levelling without hollowing the adjacent trim.
Sheen difference
Flat but dull or glossy
Check primer coverage, coating compatibility and the extent of the finish coat.
Putty and filler are not always interchangeable
Minwax Stainable Wood Filler directions require complete drying before sanding and finishing. By contrast, Minwax Wood Putty is non-hardening and is applied after stain and topcoat. These are different products with different jobs. Read the label instead of assuming every tub labelled wood repair can be sanded and painted the same way.
For painted trim, choose a repair product compatible with the substrate, hole size and coating. A thick fill may need a different application sequence from a shallow nail hole. Do not accelerate finishing simply because the surface feels dry. Follow the product's depth and drying instructions for the actual room conditions.
Avoid sanding a hollow around a tiny repair
First assess any unknown older paint before disturbing it; Health Canada warns against sanding leaded coatings. For a known suitable surface, use a controlled levelling method that follows the trim's shape. A soft pad worked repeatedly over one spot can remove surrounding material while leaving the harder filler slightly proud.
Inspect again before priming. Remove sanding residue using the coating maker's recommended method. If the fill has sunk after drying, address that before paint. If a nail head itself has returned above the surface or the trim moves when touched, investigate the fastening rather than repeatedly covering it.
A small paint dab can remain visible
Spot-prime as the paint system requires, then consider coating the complete trim face to a natural break. Differences in application texture, film thickness and sheen can show even when the colour is correct. Keep the same product and sheen, and let the finish dry before judging the result under normal light.
For a corner with missing material, the outside-corner repair guide covers rebuilding the profile. For a brown mark that returns through an otherwise flat finish, check knot and stain bleed. Neither is solved by treating it as another nail hole.
