Use timing and location as clues
A film left immediately after grouting suggests installation residue. A white crust that returns around joints after wetting may involve minerals and moisture. A dull patch that appeared after an aggressive cleaner may be damaged finish rather than dirt. None of those clues justifies pouring acid over the whole floor.
Look at the dry surface in side light and photograph a small area. Ask the installer what grout was used and what cleaning has already been attempted. A bucket of ready-to-use grout may need a different residue remover from a bag of cement grout; “grout haze cleaner” is not a universal compatibility label.
Cement grout residue
Follow the grout maker’s approved cleaner and waiting period.
Resin or ready-to-use film
Use that grout product’s specified residue-removal method.
Recurring white deposits
Check moisture and salts as well as surface cleaning.
Permanent dull patch
Ask the tile or stone supplier about possible etching.
Protect everything the rinse water touches
CUSTOM explains that efflorescence can appear as a pale deposit on Portland-cement grout and cautions that stones including marble, limestone and travertine can be acid-sensitive. This is why the surface material matters as much as the grout. CUSTOM: Grout and tile care questions.
Consider metal trims, shower-door finishes, drain covers and adjacent stone before applying a cleaner. Follow the label’s dilution, contact time, protection and rinsing requirements. Do not combine cleaners or improvise a stronger mixture. Choose an inconspicuous test patch and evaluate it after drying, not while water temporarily hides the haze.
Stop when cleaning stops helping
Repeated treatment can alter colour, roughen grout or damage the tile without removing the original defect. If one correctly performed approved test does not help, send the product details and photographs to the grout and tile suppliers. A professional can distinguish a removable deposit from a finish that needs restoration or replacement.
Check the grout itself before celebrating a clean tile face. A joint that keeps shedding material needs the powdery-grout investigation. Once the installation is clean, sound and cured, decide whether that grout needs sealing. Sealer can trap a visible problem if it is applied too early.
