A strip of wallpaper brings a brown layer of drywall facing with it, and the next strip does the same. Continuing with the same technique can turn a small repair into a whole-wall problem. Pause, assess the remaining paper and choose a removal and repair method suited to that wall.

Separate loose facing from a damaged core

Look for lifting paper edges, glue residue, gouges and areas where the gypsum itself is soft or crumbling. Do not soak the wall to see whether the paper lies flat. A dry, firm board with torn facing is a different repair from board that has deteriorated after prolonged moisture. Photograph the condition before removing more material.

Choose a sealer made for this preparation problem

Zinsser GARDZ: problem surface sealer is one manufacturer example intended for damaged drywall and wallpaper adhesive residues. Its role is to stabilize a problematic surface before subsequent decoration. Follow the specific product's preparation, coverage and drying instructions, then confirm compatibility with the filling and paint products. An ordinary finish coat is not automatically an equivalent first step.

Build the repair on a stable surface
  1. Assess

Confirm the board is dry and firm enough to retain.

  2. Prepare and seal

Deal with loose facing and residue using the selected system.

  3. Fill and feather

Restore the surface after the preparatory layer is ready.

  4. Prime and decorate

Check texture and compatibility before the final wall finish.

Do not sand through the paper to make it tidy

Aggressive sanding can enlarge the damaged area and leave a fuzzy surface. Keep the repair bounded to sound material and use the product instructions to decide what needs removal. If each pass lifts more facing, stop and reassess. Replacing a badly compromised section may be cleaner than repeatedly coating a surface that is not holding together.

Resolve old-material questions before making dust

Older paint and finishing layers need care before disturbance. Health Canada: lead-based paint describes the risk from disturbing lead-containing paint; Health Canada: asbestos and renovation recommends professional testing of suspect materials before renovation. The wallpaper's age does not establish the age or contents of the layers beneath it.

Once repaired, inspect under the room's actual lighting. The final challenge is often matching texture and paint sheen. If the exposed wall is layered plaster rather than paper-faced board, use the plaster identification guide before choosing compound.
