The tap says frost-free, so the hose stays attached for one more weekend. Then Ontario supplies a reminder that product names are shorter than installation manuals.
What frost-free actually describes
In a typical frost-free wall faucet, the shutoff mechanism sits farther inside the wall, within the heated part of the home. The outer tube is intended to drain when the faucet is closed. That protection depends on the installation and an unobstructed drainage path.
Woodford's explanation of freezing damage describes how a connected hose or device can trap water in an ordinary freezeless faucet. Freezing can then damage the tube. The leak may become apparent inside the wall when the tap is next used, rather than as an obvious drip outside all winter.
Do not confuse three different features

Make a short autumn check
Toronto's frozen-pipe prevention guidance advises removing hoses, shutting off the outdoor supply, and letting taps drain. Apply the appropriate shutdown procedure for your plumbing and faucet; if the valves or draining arrangement are unclear, have a plumber identify them.
- Find the tap model and its winter instructions before the first sustained freeze.
- Remove hoses, splitters, timers, or other attachments when the instructions require a clear outlet.
- Locate the indoor shutoff, if fitted, and keep access to it.
- Have poor drainage or recurring freezing investigated; do not assume the outdoor handle is the only vulnerable part.
- Remember taps at the side of the garage or behind outdoor storage, not only the one beside the garden hose reel.
Keep access when a deck or basement changes
A new deck skirt can hide the outdoor faucet. A finished basement can hide its shutoff. Mark both on the renovation plan and decide how someone will reach them without dismantling a cabinet or crawling beneath a low deck.
If new insulation or an enclosure changes the temperature around the inner valve or supply pipe, include that area in the plumbing review. A tap that survived previous winters may now sit in different conditions.
Watch the first spring use
When the supply is restored, have someone watch the accessible indoor connection while the tap is used. Stop and shut off the affected supply if water appears inside. Do not leave a suspect faucet running while searching for the stain; arrange repair before returning it to service.
