Find out what kind of mark you have
Photograph the area dry and in consistent light. Note whether it looks like surface dirt, a pale patch, staining, or a difference between covered and exposed boards. Keep the rug label and decking product information.

Start with the approved mild approach
Follow the relevant cleaning instructions and test as directed in an inconspicuous area. Avoid mixing cleaners or moving straight to solvents, abrasives, or heat. A stain that needs a supplier's advice can become surface damage remarkably quickly.
Do not call every colour difference a stain. Cleaning removes some things; it does not necessarily reverse the effects of backing material or uneven exposure.
Make the next rug easier to live with
- Check both the rug maker's and decking supplier's compatibility guidance.
- Lift the covering periodically and clear debris beneath it.
- Allow the area to dry rather than storing wet leaves under a decorative layer.
- Keep product labels and a few photographs for any warranty discussion.
Our preference is an outdoor room that tolerates ordinary upkeep. If a rug requires constant worry about the surface beneath it, a smaller one or no rug at all can be the better design decision.
