The box says 'vanity'. Your order says a left-hand drawer arrangement in a particular finish. Those are not quite the same level of detail. Delivery day is the best time to catch the mismatch while labels and packaging are still together.
Have the order beside the goods
Keep the purchase order, approved sample and product numbers available. Office of Consumer Affairs: home renovations recommends recording specific products, manufacturers, sizes and colours in renovation documentation. Use that detail as a receiving checklist, not merely a line in a folder.
Count packages and accessories. A missing mounting bracket can stop an installation even when the main cabinet is perfect. Check that boxes belong to the same order and, where relevant, compare batch or shade markings before mixing material.
Match the order
Check exact identifiers, quantity and accessories.
Record condition
Photograph labels, packaging and visible defects.
Resolve exceptions
Get written supplier instructions before cutting or fitting.
Store correctly
Keep accepted goods protected and identifiable.
Separate visible checks from concealed damage
Look for crushed corners, wet packaging, broken seals and exposed damage. Photograph the package before opening and the item after safe unpacking. Do not put yourself in the way of a delivery crew or dismantle a heavy crate without an agreed method.
Read what you are being asked to sign. If you have checked only the outer packaging, do not describe the contents as fully inspected. Ask the carrier how to record exceptions and the seller how to report concealed damage. Reporting deadlines and returns are seller-specific; do not assume the installation date is the deadline.
Keep a questionable item out of the work
Set aside the wrong or damaged product with its labels and packaging. Send the supplier the order reference, clear photographs and a concise description. Ask for written instructions on replacement, return or any proposed repair before altering it.
Do not let an installer cut a questionable countertop or fit damaged flooring while waiting for a reply. Installation changes both the practical remedy and the evidence. If a substitute is proposed, run the compatibility check before accepting it.
Assign ownership before the truck arrives
Agree who receives deliveries, who can approve exceptions and where goods will be stored. A neighbour doing a favour should not have to decide whether a cracked cabinet is acceptable. Protect the delivery route and confirm storage conditions for products that arrive early.
Once accepted, photograph the labels and save the receipt with the room name. It makes warranty questions and spare-material matching far easier later.
