Measure from the right starting point

Kohler’s dimensional explanation distinguishes spout height from horizontal reach. Read the drawing’s reference points rather than measuring to the decorative tip of a curved faucet. Kohler: Measuring spout height and reach.

For a deck-mounted faucet, locate the proposed mounting-hole centre on the actual countertop and compare it with the inside edge of the bowl. For a wall-mounted faucet, start at the finished wall face, including tile. An extra wall layer can change the effective reach; a rough-in measurement taken from studs is not the finished projection.

Four checks before the hole is drilled
  • Mounting centre

Place the faucet using the actual sink and countertop template.

  • Outlet position

Read both reach and outlet height from the product drawing.

  • Stream landing

Account for the aerator angle and basin shape.

  • Working clearance

Check hands, handle travel, backsplash and cleaning space.

A centre drain is not always the perfect target

Aim for usable washing space inside the bowl rather than blindly lining the stream up with a drain cap. Basin slope, water flow and the cap’s shape affect splash. A tall spout dropping water into a shallow bowl deserves extra scrutiny. If the maker sells the sink and faucet as a tested pairing, that is useful evidence; matching finish names are not the same thing.

Kohler distinguishes deck-mounted and wall-mounted bathroom faucet formats. Use that choice early, because changing to a wall-mounted unit later can mean reopening the wall, not merely swapping the visible spout. Kohler: Bathroom faucet buying guide.

Mock up the user, not just the fixtures

Tape the bowl outline on the proposed counter and use cardboard to represent the spout. Stand where you will normally wash. Check whether you can bring both hands together, operate the handle without hitting the backsplash, and clean behind the bowl. A dry mock-up will not prove splash performance, but it catches reach and collision problems cheaply.

Confirm countertop thickness, fixing access and drain-control clearance with the installer. If the outlet must be unusually high just to clear a vessel, revisit the finished rim height before ordering the whole combination. Choosing a lower bowl may solve more than choosing a taller faucet.
