Cork is appealing when the kitchen is where you stand chopping, talking and wondering why the dishwasher is still full. A warmer, more yielding feel can be welcome. The decision becomes better when you also picture a leaking fridge connection and a heavy table leg, not just bare feet on a showroom sample.

Compare the actual cork construction

Ask whether the product is a glue-down tile or a floating assembly, and identify every layer. A cork surface does not tell you whether the core, joints and finish have the same moisture limitations. Read the kitchen-use conditions and warranty for the exact product sold in your region.

Wicanders Cork Go is a specific floating product marketed for cork's thermal, acoustic and walking comfort. Those features are reasons to inspect a sample; they are not a blanket approval for every wet location or every cork floor.

Put water questions in plain language

Ask what to do with an ordinary spill, how quickly it needs attention, whether wet mopping is permitted and what happens if water reaches a joint. Distinguish routine cleaning from a dishwasher or supply-line leak. A finish described as water-resistant can still have limits that matter in a kitchen.

Check the sink, fridge and dishwasher connections before installing any new floor. Keep shutoffs reachable and consider appropriate leak detection for concealed areas. If water has already damaged the substrate, resolve that condition first. Covering it with a comfortable surface does not make the support dry.

Your priorityQuestion for the supplier
Comfort during long preparationHow does this complete product feel on the intended substrate?
Frequent spillsWhat cleaning and exposure limits apply to the exact finish and joints?
Heavy stools or furnitureWhich protectors and load conditions are approved?
Future small repairCan matching pieces be replaced and how is access obtained?

Think about the loads that stay in one place

Bring a description of table legs, stools, wheeled chairs and heavy appliances to the supplier. Ask which protectors and moving methods are approved. A soft-feeling sample pressed briefly by a thumb does not predict how a concentrated load will behave after months in the same spot.

Do not stage a destructive showroom test with a chair leg. Instead, compare the manufacturer's load and furniture guidance and inspect a larger sample for texture and finish. The practical question is how the whole room will be used, including dragging a stool back from the counter several times a day.

Plan the fitting around cabinetry

A floating floor may need movement space and restrictions on fixed cabinetry above it. A glued installation has its own substrate, adhesive and preparation requirements. Confirm the chosen system before the kitchen installer fixes the island. Our flooring sequence guide helps coordinate those trades.

Include the completed height at doors, the hall and appliance openings. Check that the dishwasher can still be removed without dismantling the counter. A trapped dishwasher is an avoidable consequence of evaluating only the visible walking area.

Ask how a local repair would work

Can one tile be replaced, or would a floating floor need to be opened from an edge? Can the finish be renewed, and what exact preparation does that require? Keep compatible spare material if practical. Do not assume that sanding, coating or a repair method suitable for solid wood also applies to this cork construction.

For a kitchen with children who drop things, a slightly forgiving feel may be worth extra attention to chair protectors and spill cleanup. For a home where wet boots routinely pile beside the sink, the maintenance demands may point elsewhere. These are choices about use, not a contest to name one material the winner.

Make the sample test realistic

Place a sample flat beside the cabinets and walk on it safely at floor level. Compare it with another shortlisted surface under the lighting you will keep. Look at seams and the finish texture as well as colour. Review the care instructions with the person who normally cleans.

Price the complete installation and save the written water and repair guidance. If you are also considering another resilient surface, linoleum versus vinyl explains why material names and constructions should not be treated as interchangeable.
