In this fictional kitchen, Priya keeps the old dishwasher because it works. The new tile stops neatly at its feet. A year later, a repair technician needs to slide it out and discovers the machine has been tiled into retirement.
Measure the path, not just the parking space
Start with the dishwasher's installation manual. Measure the cavity floor to the lowest obstruction above, including brackets or countertop buildup. Then account for the finished floor it must cross on the way out. Adjustable feet have a limited range; lowering them is not a universal escape route.
Whirlpool's installation instructions specifically address built-up floors and support under the appliance. The dimensions and method in that document apply to its covered models. Find the equivalent instructions for yours rather than copying a number from another dishwasher.
| Before flooring | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Identify every layer being added | Tile, mortar, membranes, levelling products, and underlay all affect height. |
| Check the complete cavity | Uneven floors and countertop details can make the back and front clearances different. |
| Agree the supported appliance position | A removable machine still needs stable installation and accessible connections. |
| Confirm the service route | The machine must get beyond the cabinet face without forced lifting or damage. |
Already trapped? Do not force it
Stop before levering against the countertop, bending the door, or pulling blindly on hoses and wiring. An appliance technician and renovator can assess whether an approved adjustment, local floor alteration, or a more involved cabinet repair is needed. Connections need safe disconnection by the appropriate person before the machine is moved.
The saving that was not quite a saving
Priya's imagined repair sacrifices a narrow strip of tile. The spare box is the wrong shade batch, so a discreet matching solution takes another visit. Keeping the dishwasher was reasonable. Skipping its future exit route was the expensive part.
Use the flooring-and-cabinets sequence before work starts, and lock exact appliance models before approving cabinetry.
