A crack across a mirrored closet door raises an expensive-looking question: does the whole closet front have to go? Sometimes only the insert needs replacement. Sometimes the frame or obsolete hardware makes a complete panel the better option. Measuring the visible glass alone cannot settle it.
Stop using the cracked panel while it is assessed
Keep people and pets away from the damaged door and avoid sliding it to gain access. Do not remove the frame, peel backing or lean the panel against a wall yourself. Large mirrors are heavy and damaged edges can release unexpectedly. Arrange safe removal or stabilization with the door supplier or a glazier, especially where the closet is in a child's room or a busy passage.
Take photographs from a safe position: the whole opening, frame corners, accessible labels, track and visible hardware. Record whether the crack followed an impact, a hard stop, a jam or apparently ordinary operation. The cause matters because a new insert can fail again if a distorted frame or binding roller still loads it.
Order a door insert, not just a piece of reflective glass
Contractors Wardrobe's closet-door catalogue describes safety-backed mirror products. This is an important distinction from assuming that every mirrored door is simply tempered glass. A replacement must suit the complete assembly's specified glass, backing, edge treatment and retention method. An ordinary wall mirror with similar dimensions is not automatically equivalent.
Ask the supplier to identify the door series and whether the insert is replaceable. The cut size may extend behind the frame, and gaskets or other retainers can affect the required thickness and fit. Let the person supplying and installing the insert establish those dimensions. Do not dismantle the damaged frame to obtain them.
The manufacturer's parts and installation support is a useful starting point when the brand is known. It does not establish that every discontinued frame accepts a currently stocked mirror or panel. Supply labels and photographs before accepting a proposed substitute.
Compare the repair as a complete job
| Option | When it is worth considering | What the quote should resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Replace the insert | Frame and hardware remain sound, and a compatible insert can be supplied | Safety construction, removal, glazing, reassembly and adjustment |
| Replace one complete panel | Insert repair is impractical but a compatible panel exists | Track, rollers, guides, size, weight and visual match |
| Replace the door system | Frames or tracks are damaged, parts are unavailable or the opening needs a redesign | Full opening dimensions, overlap, access and disposal |
A lower mirror-only price can lose its advantage if it excludes removal, transport and fitting. Conversely, a complete new system is unnecessary expense if a sound, serviceable frame can accept the correct insert. Ask for both options where they are genuinely available, with the same scope of labour and disposal.
If changing to a different panel material, do not assume the existing rollers can carry it or that its thickness fits the guides. A panel that fits between the jambs can still have the wrong track interface. The sliding-door overlap guide also matters if a redesign changes how much of the closet you can reach.
Have the repaired panel checked through its full travel
After the repair, the installer should check support, guides, stops, clearance and operation across the full track. Ask them to explain any original binding or impact problem and what corrected it. The mirror should be retained by the intended system, without improvised pressure points or rattling inside a bent frame.
Edge clouding without a crack is a separate issue covered in mirror desilvering. If the door replacement is part of a wider closet refresh, choose the interior material on its own merits: cedar lining has useful storage qualities but limited moth protection. Neither a new front nor an aromatic lining substitutes for a dry, accessible cupboard.
