Protection starts after the inspection
Have the frame assessed while it is visible. Pay attention to member tops, board joints, connections, and areas that stayed damp. A tape layer cannot return strength to decayed wood or make an inadequate connection acceptable. Structural repairs and decking compatibility come first.

Ask what the quote includes

- Correct a deck that cannot drain or dry properly.
- Provide a waterproof room beneath an ordinary open-board deck.
- Make reused framing last for the entire advertised life of new decking.
Owen's imagined deck loses one damaged member before the tape goes on. That uses up the money set aside for decorative lighting. The lights can wait. He would rather not dismantle the new surface to revisit a soft patch everyone had already seen.
