The plank already has a pad, but another roll promises quieter footsteps. Before stacking them, find the installation sheet for the precise flooring code. The question is whether the complete assembly is approved, not whether each item is a good product on its own.
Separate cushioning, moisture control and sound testing
A soft underlay, a thin vapour-control sheet and a tested acoustic assembly do different jobs. Ask the supplier to identify each layer on a simple cross-section. A claim that a roll reduces noise does not establish compatibility with your locking system or satisfy a building's specific flooring approval process. Obtain written acceptance for the complete proposal when a condo requires it.
Read the exception as carefully as the prohibition
Pergo XP+ Catalina Acacia: underlayment and care names FloorMate as an approved additional underlayment for the attached-pad product shown. That is useful evidence that blanket rules can be wrong in either direction. It is not permission to use any foam, cork or rubber mat under any padded plank. Match the exact product, thickness, substrate and installation method.
Flooring permission
Does this collection permit a separate layer beneath its attached pad?
Layer identity
Is the proposed material cushioning, a moisture barrier or a named combined product?
Assembly acceptance
Does the complete floor meet manufacturer and building requirements?
No written match
Pause the purchase and ask the manufacturer or retailer to resolve it.
Extra softness is not a flatness repair
If the existing substrate has dips, discuss preparation rather than trying to hide them with a thicker roll. A floor that feels soft may be moving where the joints need support. Ask the installer to record flatness using the product's method, then specify any preparation separately. Keep opening plank joints in that conversation if the floor is already installed.
Keep the assembly with the invoice
Save the flooring code, underlay code, written approval and installation sheet together. Photograph the layers before they disappear. If a retailer substitutes a roll on delivery day, compare its actual specification rather than accepting 'equivalent' as a complete answer. Include finished height in the decision: another layer can affect door clearance and the transition into the next room.
