The flooring arrives on Thursday, so Saturday sounds like installation day. That calendar works only if the product and room are ready. A heated living room, an unconditioned addition and a basement with fresh wet work are three different delivery situations.

Find the requirement for this product, not this material family

Shaw: laminate flooring installation says its laminate does not require acclimation when installation-site conditions are satisfied. By contrast, Shaw: loose lay vinyl installation specifies an acclimation period for that system. These examples explain why 'all vinyl needs two days' and 'modern floors never need acclimation' are both poor rules. Read the instructions supplied for the collection you actually bought.

Four things to confirm before installation
  • Room environment

Record temperature and humidity against the product's specified range.

  • Substrate

Obtain the required moisture and condition checks for the supporting floor.

  • Material storage

Follow carton, stacking and packaging instructions.

  • Normal use

Confirm heating or cooling can maintain the required conditions after installation.

Finish wet work and establish normal conditions

Ask the installer how fresh plaster, concrete work, painting or an incomplete heating system affects the schedule. A portable heater running for delivery day does not necessarily represent the conditions the flooring will live in. Keep the required environment operating through the period stated by the manufacturer, and avoid storing cartons where a window or register creates a local hot or cold spot.

Keep readings with their locations and dates

For products requiring moisture measurements, ask what was tested, which method was used and where the readings were taken. A number without the material and instrument context is hard to interpret later. The installer should compare results with the applicable flooring and adhesive instructions rather than borrowing a pass mark from another product.

Let readiness decide the installation date

If the room or substrate is outside the required conditions, resolve that before opening every carton. Ask the retailer how material should be stored while the issue is addressed. Save labels and instructions. The point is to prevent a dispute months later over winter gaps or opening joints, not merely to say the boxes spent a certain number of nights indoors.
