Take the mower for a measuring trip

Measure bins at their widest point, the mower with its normal handles attached and any trailer or garden cart you use. Note projections at several heights. A wheel may pass between posts while a handle catches the latch. Include room for the person guiding the load without squeezing hands against hardware. Do not count on removing safety guards or dismantling a machine every week.

Measure the passage in three places
  • Equipment envelope

Include handles and projections at their full height.

  • Open gate

Measure between the actual hardware and leaf.

  • Approach turn

Test the corner before and after the gate.

Mock up the turn, not just the gap

Mark the proposed opening with temporary markers and walk the route with the actual equipment. Include the side-yard corner, air-conditioner, hose reel and steps. Show the gate at its intended open angle, because a leaf sitting diagonally across the route consumes useful width. If a closer or stop limits opening, design around that limit. A double gate can provide occasional width while keeping a manageable everyday leaf.

If widening the opening means two leaves, include Double Gates Need a Plan for the Ground Bolts in the layout instead of leaving it for installation day.

Plan for the occasional large delivery

Ask likely delivery or maintenance contractors about their access needs before building a fixed narrow opening. A removable fence panel may be useful where lawful and deliberately designed, but its posts and fastenings still need a proper detail. Record the final clear opening in the house file. Future-you ordering a replacement heat pump will appreciate something better than "it should fit."

Nationwide's NW6260 instructions deduct a specified allowance from the opening for that kit; this illustrates why a frame dimension must follow the chosen hardware rather than a universal gap. Nationwide Industries: NW6260 gate frame instructions.

Before you finish

  • Test with the gate at its permitted open angle.
  • Allow room for hands beside the load.
  • Record occasional service-access needs.
