The island drawing shows three generous drawers beneath the cooktop. The appliance drawing shows a downdraft body and a duct occupying roughly the same part of the universe. Both drawings can look convincing until someone puts them together.
A downdraft system needs a coordinated section through the counter, cabinet and floor. Depending on the model, the fan may be integral, mounted within cabinetry or located remotely. The visible slot or rising panel tells you very little about the space the complete system requires.
Draw the whole assembly
Appliance envelope
Cooktop, downdraft body and required separation.
Air route
Blower arrangement, transitions and duct to the permitted destination.
Service route
Connections, removable panels and component removal.
Useful storage
Drawer boxes and runners fitted around the confirmed equipment.
Start with the exact cooktop and downdraft model numbers. Some products combine the two; others are separate appliances that must be compatible. Obtain the installation drawings rather than only the sales sheet. Show the counter thickness, cutouts, rear clearances, cabinet rails and the equipment below the surface on the same drawing.
Broan's 28000-series installation guide illustrates why this matters: that system coordinates the cooktop, downdraft and an exterior or in-line blower. It is an example of an equipment arrangement, not a drawing to reuse for a different current model. Get the manual belonging to the product you will actually install.
Add the electrical connection and any other appliance services. A cable or connection box still needs its permitted route and access. Do not assume the space behind a drawer is free just because the drawer front looks shallow. The box, runners and rear hardware all occupy volume.
Make the duct route real
Trace the duct from the unit to its outdoor termination, including transitions and turns. Broan's hood FAQ emphasises an appropriate outdoor discharge and a route with few bends. Use the selected model's duct requirements; reducing a duct to squeeze past a drawer is not a cabinetry solution.
An island route may need to pass through the floor, which brings joists, beams and services into the discussion. Have those conditions checked before locating the island or cutting the counter. Structural members cannot be treated as empty space on a kitchen plan. A basement ceiling below can help reveal the route, but finishes may still conceal important details.
If a proposed model has an approved recirculating option, establish exactly what that assembly requires and where the return air exits. It is not permission to leave an exhaust duct loose inside a cabinet. Our ducted-versus-recirculating guide explains the different destinations and limitations.
Compare storage after the equipment fits
Ask for the usable internal dimensions of every affected drawer. A full-width drawer front may conceal a shortened or divided box. Compare that remaining space with the pans, lids and utensils you actually intend to store there. An elegant front elevation can hide an awkward daily compromise.
Tape out the proposed drawer footprint on a table and place your largest cookware inside it. Check handle positions and the space needed to lift a pan out. This simple trial often tells you more than another cabinet rendering. If the storage loss is substantial, compare a different cabinet layout or ventilation arrangement before settling for drawers that barely earn their handles.
Cooktop cooling and separation requirements remain separate from the downdraft's own space. Read our guide to drawers beneath an induction cooktop alongside the actual manuals. Meeting one appliance's clearance does not automatically satisfy the other.
Keep a route for service
Ask the installer a very ordinary question: how does the component come out when it needs attention? Identify the access panel, removable drawer or cabinet opening used to reach connections and fasteners. A motor that fits during construction may become trapped after the countertop and adjacent cabinets are installed.
Check filter removal from above as well. The hood should be cleanable without dismantling the kitchen. Keep any special removal tool and filter information with the appliance documents. For a remote blower, include its own service location in the handover.
Before ordering, have the cabinet supplier, countertop fabricator and appliance installer work from the same revision of the drawing. Confirm who checks compatibility, who supplies transitions and who makes the final connection. The best time to discover that a drawer is imaginary is while it is still a rectangle on paper.
