Use the timing as a clue

Write down when the haze appeared. Did it follow installation, joint sanding, sealing, pressure washing or a winter under snow? Compare sheltered and exposed areas. A powdery deposit, a glossy white film and a lightened rough patch do not necessarily share a cause. Photograph the paving dry and after ordinary rain, but do not use temporary darkening when wet as proof that the surface is undamaged.

Similar whiteness, different next steps
  • Powder-like deposit

Ask whether efflorescence fits the product and timing.

  • Film after sealing

Investigate the coating and moisture conditions.

  • Changed texture after cleaning

Seek advice about surface damage before more chemicals.

Inspect the dry surface before cleaning

Find the paver brand, product finish and any factory treatment. Keep the bags or invoices for joint material and sealers. Efflorescence can be a cosmetic deposit, while cleaning can alter a surface and a sealer can trap a problem beneath a film. If the surface has become rough or visibly etched after a chemical treatment, pause and contact the paver supplier before trying a stronger mixture.

If whiteness appeared after a coating, start with Paver Sealer Has Turned White or Started Peeling instead of assuming a mineral deposit.

Make a small approved test

Use only a cleaner approved for the particular surface and suspected deposit. Test in a discreet location, follow dilution and dwell instructions, and evaluate after complete drying. Protect surrounding planting and finishes as directed. If natural weathering is the recommended option for a harmless deposit, waiting may be less damaging than repeated cleaning. Do not seal over an unresolved haze and hope the colour becomes permanent.

Before you finish

  • Save the product names and treatment dates.
  • Judge a test patch only after drying.
  • Do not escalate cleaner strength without identifying the cause.
