First, locate the movement

Make sure it is the bowl that moves, rather than just the seat. Look at the gap between the porcelain base and the tile while someone observes the fixture without deliberately rocking it. A shifting seat has its own fasteners; a moving bowl involves the connection to the building. Water on the floor also needs tracing: a dripping supply valve and a leaking waste seal are different repairs.

Note whether the toilet has always moved, started after new flooring, or became loose gradually. Recent flooring points toward support and flange height. New softness, stained grout or a mark on the ceiling below needs investigation before a cosmetic fix. An apparently dry base does not prove the concealed waste connection is sound.

Which part needs attention?
  • Seat slides; bowl stays still

Inspect the seat mounts rather than the floor bolts.

  • Bowl rocks on hard, intact tile

Have the base support and flange connection checked.

  • Floor yields or water appears

Stop use and investigate leakage or damaged structure.

Support the bowl before clamping it

The flange secures the toilet at the floor; Oatey describes fastening it into the supporting floor. That connection cannot compensate for a bowl balanced on a high tile edge. Oatey: Installing a toilet flange.

A plumber may use appropriate non-compressible toilet shims where the fixture instructions allow them. The aim is supported porcelain, not bolt tension pulling the bowl down across an empty gap. Damaged floor material must be repaired first. Do not use the toilet as a test weight while experimenting with shims or fasteners.

Movement can mean resetting the seal

If the toilet must be lifted, the seal needs attention as part of resetting it. Kohler directs installers to follow the actual wax-ring instructions; a generic stack of extra wax is not a diagnosis. Kohler: Installing a toilet wax ring.

Ask the plumber to document the flange condition, floor support and seal choice before the bowl goes back. Then check operation and the accessible connections. The finish around the base comes after a stable, leak-free installation. If this began with tile work, the flange-height guide explains what changed.
