Watch the hinge bases
With the lid open, gently move the seat by hand and watch the mounting points. If a hinge base slides across the porcelain, inspect its fastening system. If the base stays still but the seat twists, look for a worn hinge, incomplete quick-release engagement or damaged seat. Do not test by leaning your full weight sideways.
Photograph the hardware above and, where accessible, below the bowl. Some seats use nuts under an open rim; others use top-fixing inserts, special anchors or a quick-release plate. A similar-looking replacement bolt may omit the piece that centres the fixing in the porcelain hole.
Kohler’s Quick Attach instructions show why hardware identity matters: the conical part of that system’s wing nut engages at the bowl hole before the bolt is tightened. Those instructions are for that system, not every seat sold with a Kohler toilet. Kohler: Quick Attach seat hardware.
Hinge base moves
Check seating, washers, inserts and the specified tightening method.
Seat moves on a fixed base
Check the hinge or quick-release connection.
Porcelain bowl moves
Investigate floor support and flange attachment instead.
Check fit before buying more fasteners
The seat needs to match the bowl shape and mounting arrangement. Compare the seat outline with the rim and check that its underside bumpers land where intended. A seat perched awkwardly on a curved rim can work its fixings loose even when the bolts start out tight. Keep rubber pads and bushings that belong to the assembly; do not replace them with improvised stacks of washers.
Replace tired parts rather than chasing tightness
A split plastic nut, stripped thread, missing pad or cracked hinge needs the correct replacement. Use hand tools and the maker’s tightening instructions. If an anchor spins inside an inaccessible bowl, stop before grinding or drilling near porcelain. The manufacturer can identify the removal method from the toilet and seat model numbers.
After reassembly, check that the lid opens clear of the tank and the seat releases only when intended. Recheck for movement during ordinary use. If the bowl itself is shifting, switch to the rocking-toilet guide; seat bolts will not solve that.
