The old oven's front is a very convincing disguise for the opening behind it. Measuring that visible frame gives you a starting point for shopping, not a fabrication dimension. Two ovens in the same advertised width can ask for different openings and support details.
Record the oven face and cabinet opening separately
Start with the existing model number and its original installation drawing if available. Measure visible cabinet boundaries, nearby drawer fronts and door clearances. Call hidden cutout dimensions unverified until the installer can safely inspect them; do not pull a heavy hardwired oven out to satisfy a tape-measure question.
Whirlpool: Wall oven dimension guide W11598900 shows different traditional and flush installation arrangements and explicitly directs users to the installation guide before cutting or selecting cabinetry. Use the dimensions for your exact model and intended mounting style. A flush appearance can require a different recess from an overlapping front.
Opening
Clear width, height and depth behind the old trim.
Front
Overlap, ventilation details and clearance to adjacent fronts.
Support
Shelf construction and the model's load requirements.
Services
Approved junction-box position and electrical compatibility.
The shelf and cable need their own approval
An old support shelf may have been made for a different appliance weight or shape. Ask the cabinet installer to check its construction and fixing against the new manual. Space behind the oven must accommodate the specified electrical arrangement without trapping a cable or preventing the oven from seating properly.
Have a licensed electrical contractor verify the supply, connection and any changes required. A matching-looking cable or breaker label is not enough. Keep this review ahead of delivery, especially when changing from a single oven to a combination appliance.
Resolve gaps and clearances before ordering trim
If the cutout is larger than allowed, a decorative strip does not automatically make the support or mounting correct. If it is smaller, cutting away a rail can weaken the cabinet or expose an unfinished edge. Ask whether the manufacturer offers an approved trim or fit arrangement and have the cabinetry details confirmed.
Then test the open oven door against the island and the standing position needed to lift a roasting pan. Check the delivery route too; large-appliance access is a separate question from cabinet fit. Keep the agreed model number on every order so a last-minute substitution does not silently change the opening.
