A fridge can fit the kitchen opening perfectly and still spend delivery day in the front hall. The difficult dimension is often the space needed to turn a deep rectangular object, not its width going straight through a door.
Measure the route as a connected path
Sketch the path from the delivery vehicle to the final opening. Mark door openings, porch steps, hall widths, ceiling changes, tight corners and landings. Measure the clear opening past the actual door and handle, not the frame's nominal size. Photograph the tight places from both directions so the delivery team can understand the turn.
Whirlpool: Appliance delivery and installation guide specifically includes hallways, stairs and tight turns in delivery planning. Its advice to leave manoeuvring room matters: a bare appliance dimension does not include hands, moving equipment or protective wrapping. Let the delivery provider approve the handling allowance instead of assuming a barely equal measurement is sufficient.

Installation gaps, connections and door operation.
Ask what the delivery dimension includes
Product listings may show depth with handles, without handles or without doors. Find the diagram for the exact model and ask which parts the crew is permitted and equipped to remove. Door removal can involve electrical and water connections; do not assume it is a casual homeowner preparation step.
If the route works only with an exterior door removed, confirm that service in writing. Interior doors, handrails and built-in obstructions may be excluded. A promise that the fridge is delivery-ready does not necessarily include carpentry or disconnecting the old water line.
Protect the route and keep the final opening honest
Clear furniture and loose rugs, secure pets elsewhere and tell the crew about delicate floors or freshly finished surfaces. Agree on protection appropriate to the floor rather than placing a slippery improvised sheet on the route. Do not use the old refrigerator as a measuring proxy: its hinges, handles and depth may be quite different.
Recheck the cabinet ventilation and door gaps after any new floor or side panels are installed. Confirm who disconnects and removes the old unit and who connects and checks the new one. Keep food storage arrangements separate from that schedule so a delivery delay does not force a hurried, unsuitable installation.
