The used dryer is the same width as the washer and the colour is close enough. That still leaves the most important question unanswered: does the manufacturer approve this exact pairing? Get that answer before bringing it down the basement stairs.

Use complete model numbers

Photograph the identification labels on both machines. Compare them with the stacking-kit compatibility information and both installation manuals. Keep any written manufacturer confirmation with the order. A retailer description saying "universal" is not a substitute for an approved combination.

Whirlpool stackable laundry pairs and kits describes front-load pairs stacked with a kit and the dryer above the washer. Its accessories and installation requirements vary by appliance. Do not use a loose mat or homemade straps instead of the specified connection.

The compatibility check has three parts
  • Washer

Exact model permits the proposed stacked installation.

  • Dryer

Exact model is approved above that washer.

  • Kit

Correct kit and complete hardware join that particular pair.

Fit includes controls and removal

Mark the finished height and depth on the wall. Have the shortest regular user check whether the controls and dryer opening are comfortable to reach. Account for the kit, connection space, flooring and any approved base; catalogue cabinet heights alone are not the final installation size.

Ask the installers how they will lift and position the dryer, and how it will come down for future service. A narrow closet can satisfy the operating footprint while making removal difficult. Keep a clear route into the room and do not build fixed trim that traps the stack.

Settle the services before stacking day

Confirm water-shutoff access, drain routing and the dryer connection with the appropriate installer. For a vented dryer, check the connector space behind it. A correct stacking kit cannot make an impossible vent route acceptable.

If either machine must be replaced later, recheck compatibility rather than assuming the old kit transfers. Retain the kit identifier and original instructions. When a pairing cannot be confirmed, side-by-side placement or a manufacturer-designed laundry centre is a better planning route than inventing an attachment.
