Nora wanted fewer leaves in the basement window well. Sensible. The clear cover she had found online looked tidy, and the family dog would stop dropping his ball into the gravel. Also sensible. Before she ordered it, we asked how it opened from below.

Fit the cover to an escape route

A bedroom-floor egress arrangement involves more than glass size. The person needs to open the window and continue out through the well. A cover that works beautifully from the garden can still obstruct that route from inside.

Article 9.9.10.1.(5) of the 2024 Ontario Building Code Compendium requires a protective enclosure over the relevant window well to be openable from inside without keys, tools or special knowledge. The same article addresses well clearance and window-sash movement. Confirm the applicable arrangement with the local building department, especially where the window or well is being changed.

Check the assembly, not just the cover width

  • Identify whether this window is part of the required egress arrangement.
  • Check the fully open sash, its hinges and any hardware against the cover and well.
  • Have the installer demonstrate the release and clear route from the inside position without anyone entering an unsafe well.
  • Confirm that the cover's support and fixing method match its instructions and the approved arrangement.

Do not add a padlock or permanent fasteners that defeat emergency opening. A cover labelled for a particular well still needs checking against your actual window. A hinged sash may occupy space differently from a slider.

Leaves, snow and the garden hose count too

Canada's basement-window maintenance guidance recommends keeping wells clear and following cover instructions, with specific attention to egress requirements. A fitted cover does not eliminate inspection or make poor drainage disappear.

Keep stored objects, dense planting, snow and ice from blocking the route. Do not treat a clear plastic cover as a walking platform unless it is expressly designed and installed for that load. If the well is deep or difficult to access, discuss the complete escape arrangement rather than adding a cover in isolation.

Make the quiet maintenance job easy

Nora chose a cover with a release she could operate from the required side, after the installer checked the window swing. We left her with the product instructions and a simple seasonal check: open, clear, close correctly. The dog still had other ways to misplace his ball.
