The room looks dry until you pull the curtain back. A wet sill behind it is easy to miss because the fabric has been doing such a good job of hiding the window. Start by identifying where the water is, not by ordering a replacement window.
Identify the wet surface
Wipe accessible room-side glass and see whether that is where the droplets are. Moisture trapped between sealed panes is a glazing question. Water appearing from above or at a wall joint during rain calls for a leak investigation. Photograph the location before drying the sill.
Health Canada: addressing moisture and mould indoors notes that heavy coverings can trap cold and moisture and recommends allowing warm air to reach windows. It also recommends controlling indoor humidity. That does not mean every basement window problem is condensation.
Room-side droplets
Observe covering position, humidity and air circulation.
Between sealed panes
Ask a window specialist about the glazing unit.
Water from frame or wall
Investigate rain entry or another leak route.
Try a change you can actually compare
Record room humidity and outdoor conditions, then leave the covering open and keep nearby room-air paths unobstructed. Inspect and dry accessible wet surfaces promptly. Compare similar weather rather than attributing one dry afternoon entirely to the curtain change.
For privacy, consider a covering arrangement that still allows room-side circulation and access for inspection. Avoid pushing stored bins, furniture or fabric tightly into the window recess. A blind with the same visual size can leave a different usable air gap from a heavy curtain.
Opening the window is not always the answer
Warm humid outdoor air can add moisture to a cool basement. Do not use an open window as an automatic cure while a dehumidifier works beside it. Review the room's moisture sources and ventilation with an appropriate professional if the condition persists.
If the sill or surrounding material has remained damp, smells musty or shows growth, arrange assessment of the affected materials as well as the room conditions. A dry pane today does not establish that hidden trim is sound.
Keep storage clear of the outside wall and investigate a damp carpet edge separately if present. The goal is to identify each wet surface and its cause, not make the meter display a reassuring number while another leak continues.
