A cold strip beside the sofa is easy to dismiss until a sock comes back damp. Move usable belongings away from the area and record what you found. The carpet edge may show where moisture collects, not where it originally entered.

Record useful clues without delaying the response

Photograph the affected length and the corresponding outside wall from safe, accessible positions. Note the date, recent rain or snowmelt, nearby plumbing use and the room humidity reading if you have a meter. Record whether the skirting, wall or only the carpet feels affected without dismantling the wall.

Clues to take to the assessment
  • After rain or snowmelt

Compare the location with downspouts, grading and window wells.

  • After plumbing use

Identify nearby fixtures, pipes and appliance cycles.

  • During humid weather

Ask whether cold surfaces and room conditions contribute.

  • Persistent or uncertain

Have concealed moisture and affected materials assessed.

Wet material needs attention now

Health Canada: addressing moisture and mould indoors advises prompt moisture control and addresses the difficulty of retaining wet or mouldy porous furnishings. If carpet or underlay remains wet, smells musty or shows growth, get appropriate help assessing drying and removal. Do not treat a surface that feels dry as proof the layers beneath are dry.

Keep out of floodwater near electrical equipment and do not disturb suspect mouldy finishes. Sewage, extensive growth or unknown contamination changes the response. This article is about useful observations for the assessment, not a cleanup procedure.

Connect outside and inside evidence

The outside wall might have a downspout discharging nearby, raised soil or a drainage opening buried under new landscaping. Photograph those conditions rather than assuming one is the cause. Review siding and garden-bed clearance if that detail has changed recently.

Ask the assessor to explain how the proposed repair addresses the identified route and how dryness will be checked before finishes return. Replacing carpet first can conceal continuing dampness and make the next investigation more expensive.

Rearrange the room so the edge stays inspectable

Keep a practical inspection route along the affected wall and avoid packing new boxes into the same corner. Basement storage choices can reduce the consequences of a future problem. If condensation is also appearing at the window, the curtain and airflow check is another useful observation, not a substitute for resolving this wet floor.
