The cedar is warm and lovely. The little black trails under the fixings are less welcome. They look dramatic enough to invite an equally dramatic cleaning product.
Metal can leave more than a rust-coloured mark
The Western Red Cedar Lumber Association explains both rusty discoloration and blue-black iron reactions. Its care guidance also distinguishes moisture-related extractive stains and mildew. The pattern is a clue, not a laboratory test.
Solve the cause alongside the mark
Check whether staining repeats below particular fixings or where water sits. Ask the supplier to identify the installed metal and a compatible remedy. Replacing structural fasteners is not a cosmetic swap: the replacement must also meet the connection requirements. Test any approved cleaner discreetly and follow its handling directions. Never mix cleaning chemicals.
