Gas Stove Venting in Ontario: Rules vs Good Advice

Ontario gas stove ventilation explained: what the law requires, what Health Canada recommends, and when an outside-vented hood needs design review.

Two ideas often get mixed together here: Ontario's legal requirements and good ventilation advice. Both matter. They just arrive from different rulebooks, because apparently one rulebook would have been too relaxing.

TSSA says registered fuels contractors are the only businesses legally authorized to perform fuels-related work in Ontario. Verify the company in TSSA's authorized fuels contractor registry. The contractor must handle the gas connection and appliance work within the technician's certification and the accepted installation requirements.

Ontario also requires carbon monoxide alarms in qualifying houses. As of January 1, 2026, the province's carbon monoxide safety guide calls for alarms adjacent to sleeping areas and on every storey of a house with a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, or attached storage garage. What Health Canada recommends

Health Canada's indoor-air guidance recommends a range hood over a gas stove that vents outside, with the fan running while you cook. Gas cooking can add nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide. All cooking adds particles and moisture. A recirculating hood catches some grease and returns the air to the room. Useful, perhaps. Outdoor exhaust, no.

How much airflow is enough?

There is no useful one-number answer for every kitchen. Hood size, burner output, mounting height, duct length, elbows, exterior cap, and house pressure all matter. Health Canada's cooking factsheet reports that a 300 CFM hood on high reduced exposure by more than 80 percent compared with slower settings in the studies it cites. That is a reason to use the fan, not a universal sizing rule.

  • Choose a hood that fully covers the burners.
  • Use the duct diameter and material required by the hood manufacturer.
  • Keep the route short and direct, with as few elbows as practical.
  • Terminate outdoors, not in an attic, garage, soffit cavity, or wall cavity.
  • Make the exterior cap accessible for inspection and cleaning.

When does makeup air matter?

Who installs the gas connection?

The gas appliance and fuel connection belong with a TSSA-registered fuels contractor and appropriately certified technician. Finally, run the hood on high while cooking when practical, use the back burners, keep the appliance vents clear, and maintain certified carbon monoxide alarms. The best hood setting is not off because it is loud. Fix the noise or the duct. Keep the air moving.
