On a cabinet adjustment visit in Etobicoke, we were offered coffee and an apology for the extractor. It had become loud and not especially useful. The owner said the filters were probably due for a wash. "Probably" was carrying quite a lot of responsibility in that sentence.

Find out which filter you have

A metal mesh panel catches grease in its fine layers. A metal baffle filter uses shaped channels. A recirculating hood may also have a carbon filter for odours. They can occupy the same appliance and still need different care.

Broan-NuTone's filter guidance recommends regular cleaning of its washable metal grease filters and replacement of its non-ducted carbon filters. It also notes that detergent and water conditions can discolour aluminium. Read your hood's instructions before treating the dishwasher as a universal answer.

Keep the cleaning job pleasantly boring

  • Let the cooking area cool, switch the hood off, and follow the manual's power-disconnection instructions for cleaning.
  • Remove only the filter parts intended for routine user care. Support the panel as its catch releases.
  • Use the cleaning method and detergent allowed for that filter. Protect delicate mesh from bending.
  • Rinse and dry as directed, then refit the panel securely before operating the hood.

This is not a contest to find the strongest chemical under the sink. Oven cleaner, abrasives and mixtures of cleaning products can create a much bigger job. Keep cleaners away from the motor, switches and lighting, and do not immerse electrical components.

If the catch is damaged or the mesh is breaking apart, record the hood model and look for the specified replacement. A panel that nearly fits is likely to remain annoying long after you have forgotten its small saving.

How often is often enough?

Start with the maker's interval, then look at the actual buildup. A household that fries frequently will have a different routine from one that mostly reheats soup. Put the model and replacement-filter reference in a kitchen notes folder. It saves another expedition through the drawer of mysterious booklets.

At the Etobicoke house, the owner added a reminder alongside the coffee-machine clean. We dealt with the cabinet hinge we had come for and left the filter drying where it could not be forgotten. It was a very satisfying amount of drama for a Tuesday.

Clean filters will not fix every weak hood

If extraction remains poor, have the installer assess the fan, damper and duct sizing. A wind-rattling flap is a separate clue. Repeated grease deposits may also warrant checking whether the hood's height and coverage suit the stove.

The aim is a hood you actually use and can maintain without dismantling the kitchen. That is a better long-term feature than one more lighting mode.
