Set the opening with the designer
Provide the exact door dimensions and installation requirements, including frame depth and threshold detail. Have the existing wall and loads assessed before treating a catalogue width as a construction dimension.
Weyerhaeuser's field-issue guidance warns against improvised changes to engineered wood. If the design includes an engineered header, its size, bearing, and connections belong in the approved detail, not in an on-site substitution.
Coordinate inside and outside
Ask how the siding or brick will be made good, where the interior trim will land, and what happens to nearby outlets or heating. Put the outdoor landing and finished floor levels on the same section as the threshold.
Check the quote boundary
- Structural design and any required inspection or field review.
- Door supply, delivery, installation, and weather detailing.
- Exterior cladding and interior finish restoration.
- Moving affected services and completing the landing.

A wider door can be worth doing. Our preference is the width that improves the room on an ordinary day, with a fully resolved threshold, rather than the largest unit that can technically fit between two corners.
